What “worldwide” includes
Our country directory includes the 193 UN member states, Palestine and Vatican City, plus Kosovo and Taiwan. Regions serve travel navigation and do not imply a position on sovereignty. Dependent territories and special administrative regions are not yet separate guides; do not assume the parent country's customs apply.
Different levels of detail
- United States: a detailed, multi-source guide covering 16 service situations.
- Country quick references: individually researched dining and tipping summaries, with additional service notes where supported.
- Limited evidence: a page exists, but we do not supply a confident national rate. These pages are excluded from the search-engine sitemap.
Country guides include service advice supported by their sources. Coverage varies by destination; an omitted service does not mean no tip is expected. Check the scope and exceptions alongside each answer. Worldwide coverage does not mean every service in every country has been fully researched.
Latest deeper review
The September 17, 2026 research pass expanded 50 country guides. Across the 196 quick references, documented non-dining categories increased from 96 to 291. Canada now has guidance for all 13 checklist categories, although some services have discretionary advice rather than a fixed amount. The United States retains its separate detailed guide.
We rejected obsolete currency examples and distinguish country customs from city-specific advice, operator budgets and older suggested amounts. Many less-documented destinations still need more research.
How sources are used
We inspect country-specific references, including tourism authorities, local visitor information, established travel publishers and tour operators. Operator policies are not treated as national rules. Source links, access dates and known age limitations appear on each page. Conflicting guidance is described, and unsupported amounts are left open.
